Merry Christmas Grandkids!

This year's hand made gift from me to each of my grandkids
is a Child & Nana Journal.
The idea is to write in their personal journal and maybe  add some art
and give it to them. Then they can write a note and maybe add some art
and give it back to me. And on it goes.
These 2 journals traveled to Berlin which makes this concept a bit challenging.
I plan to write my note, and maybe add some art and mail it in
a regualr envelope to Berlin and the boys can glue it into their journals.
Them they can send me photos of what they write to me.
Sounds like a fun adventure this year!

Day 21 - Quilted Advent Calendar

One of our family's traditions is to count down the days of December
using this Advent Calendar where we put a yellow ultra suede star
on for each day leading up to Christmas.
Now my grandkidscarry on this tradition.

Advent Candle Holder From Dad

Every Christmas for several years when he was alive, my Dad
would create something useful for each of us 7 "kids".
I use this candle holder he fashioned from
chair railing to celebrate Advent.
I am thankful for the creative heritage from my Dad.

Buttoned Up Blue Christmas Tree

Artists appreciate hand made art.
I wish I had taken a photo of the original fabric
of this Christmas Tree that I purchased a few years ago.
I really liked the idea even though it was an odd color of green
with gold buttons. I prefer to decorate with silver and blue.
I decided to refashion the tree using the old shape as my pattern.
Now it's quilted from blue batik fabric, white buttons,
wood repainted black and topped with a silver bow.
Ahh, it's ready for Christmas!

2017 Have a HeART for Big Brothers Big Sisters

I had never heard of
Have a HeART forBig Brothers Big Sisters
until last year.  And I quickly created a Quilted Art HeART
to donate for the Valentine's Day Fund Raiser event.
This year I've started a bit early and am
creating one very similar that will also be mounted
on a black 10 inch X 10 in Cradle Board.
Hand embroidery and unique buttons to be added.
Who wants to join and create a piece as well?

Rocks In First - "Simple Balance"

Aqua Blue Modern Art Quilt Wall Hanging |'Simple Balance"
As is my habit, I listen to books on CD in my car.
and currently I'm listening to One Life Solution by Dr. Henry Cloud.
A phrase he build on is "Put the rocks in first" when explaining
to purposefully choose our priorities.
It reminded me of this piece "Simple Balance". A good reminder
for this Christmas season.
It's for sale in my Etsy Shop

Black Lace Shirt Extender

Before now I've added batik fabric to the bottom
of a few of my blouses
and have been happy with the result.
Now I've sewn a black lace onto the bottom
of a camisole so it can be worn under
all my shirts.  Very simple quick solution.

Surface Design Group - Shiva Paint Sticks

Surface Design Group played with
Shiva Paint Sticks this month.
I've seen demos yet this was my first time using them.
I used a friends hand made texture plate and a purple color on
a hand dyed fabric where I wanted more purple.
I also experimented on a commercial white on white fabric
hoping for a batik effect.
I also experimented with cork letters (HOPE, LIFE)
my swirl stamps, rug canvas, gingko leaf texture plate,
hand made metal washer plate and a bathtub drain.
Through the fun I learned to look more decerningly for texture options,
I'm not sure I like that these take 3 days to dry yet after
washing  they are supposed to have a nice feel and be very stable.
Who else has tried Shiva Paint Sticks. I'd enjoy to read your thoughts about them.

Now, my granddaughter and I create them together to sell.
Currently we put 20 of them in Cherry Street Kids Shop
in 3 different colors - red, green & black.
What a fun adventure.

Quilted Bow Ties

I met a first grade teacher of a local school who
 wears a unique bow tie
to teach daily.
He is hoping to eventually have 180 different ties for each school day of the year.
He's created ones from Playing cards, maps, legos, pencils and other elements.
I wanted to add to his collection since he didn't have any quilted ties yet.
His school colors are red and black and his college alma mater are Purple and Gold.
The blue one is in there just for extra. I love this example of a fun teacher.

Re-Purposed Into Ironing Board Cover

While auditioning fabrics to create a new
ironing board cover to coordinate with grey for my studio,
I came across this grey/purple batik fabric that was
once a valance in my kitchen.  A few unstitched
seams, covering the expired ironing board cover,
and a bit of muscle from Hubby installing it,
and viola, a "new" ironing board cover
without going to the store.

Cutting & Rearranging

It's a risk to cut into pieced fabric.
Yet, I obtained a hand dyed piece recently
that had batting and backing already attached.
I made a few cuts and rearranged and plan to
hand applique additional blue hand dyed strips
 to camouflage the divisions.
My plan is to do lots of hand stitching next.
