I stitched the outline of a bird in 3 strands purple DMC Floss on hand dyed yellow/purple fabric.

Day 2 - Purple Fly Stitch & Colonial Knots
added to Bird tail using purple DMC Floss

Day 3 - Added Lazy Daisy half flowers using purple variegated Finca #8

How wonderful for your granddaughter to learn this wonderful artform from such a lovely and talented grandmother...
What a delightful project to do with your granddaughter. I'm impressed you found a way to work on it simultaneously.
