5 Reasons Why I Create Hand Made Ornaments

No automatic alt text available.
Every year I create an unique ornament for each of my grandchildren
and a few extra to offer for sale.
Why do I continue this tradition now that we have 12 grandchildren?
Here's my top 5 reasons:
1- Hand made ornaments are a piece of art anyone can afford.
Even though time intensive, ornaments take less time to create than larger art
yet are so much fun to make!
No automatic alt text available.
2 - Hand made ornaments become treasures for many years to come.
What a delight to open the ornament box each year to rediscover
a hand made ornament from the past.

3- Hand made ornaments are once a year memento that does not require dusting .
Who likes to dust?  Not me!

4 - Hand made ornaments can begin an original collection that can grow each year.
Imagine your Christmas tree full of original small art pieces
that you collected annually.

5  - Hand made ornaments offer a legacy of art to the next generation.
Art is a powerful force that can bring joy and light to
your loved ones that outlive you.

Creating From The Design Wall | Day 290 A Block A Day Challenge

No automatic alt text available.
Today, Day 290 A Block A Day Challenge
I finally knew how to use this female silhouette I created as part of a surface design group.
Lots of hand stitching ahead and maybe a bit of fabric additions for tweaking, I
am reminded to keep seeking purpose for those elements waiting on the design wall.

Joel McKerrow, Poet @ Gathering Of Artisans 2018

I went to the worship service last night at
Gathering of Artisans.#GOA2018
Australian Poet, Joel McKerrow spoke and it was awesome. Risk was mentioned several times. At the end he gave us a prompt to write for 5 minutes without stopping the flow. The prompt was about being a landscape. .So I'm choosing to risk and share what I wrote. Prompt : If I were a landscape, what landscape would I be?
I am Exchanged
I am....colors of reds, greens, oranges, purples, blues and even browns all blending together carefully, masterfully, beautifully expressing God's beauty and wonder. Extending without bounds, spreading out further and further, reaching the sun. Fresh air, new life and glory abounding. Reaching to touch others and bringing light and joy and beauty to them without boundaries. Expressing real life, life as it was meant to be. Freedom, true expression of feeling every moment of joy and restoring hurts into a new story. Making new pathways from ruts. Forging ahead with new delight and purposefulness. Freedom.

Revised Knitted Preemie Hat For Neo Natal Unit - Day 267 A Block A Day Challenge

No automatic alt text available.
My local Neo Natal Unit prefers these tiny
knitted Preemie Hats without the pompom,
 so I revised
my pattern to create a pompom type tip
that is part of the creation so it is more secure.
I usually make 3 a month since they are quick.
I hope you'll give them a try too.
Revised Knitted Preemie Hat

Supplies:

2 pair of US Size #7  - 18 inch circular needles
( double pointed needles can be substituted)
Soft cotton or acrylic 4 ply yarn
5 stitch markers, Tapestry needle, Scissors

Directions:

Cast on 48 stitches placing a stitch marker every 8 stitches.
Join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.
Knit in the round until Preemie  hat is 4 inches long.
Decrease for crown of hat:
Row 1 -Add stitch markers every 8 stitches.
Row 2 - K6 K2Tog Slip Stitch marker. Repeat all the way around.
Row 3 - K5 K2tog. Slip Stitch marker. Repeat all the way around.
Row 4 - K4 K2tog. Slip Stitch marker. Repeat all the way around.
Row 5 - K3 K2tog. Slip Stitch marker. Repeat all the way around.
Row 6 - K2 K2tog. Slip Stitch marker. Repeat all the way around.
Row 7 - K1 K2tog. Slip Stitch marker. Repeat all the way around.
Row 8 - K2tog. Remove  Stitch marker. Repeat all the way around.
With 6 remaining stitches, knit around 3 times creating the top.
Cut yarn leaving a 4 inch tail.
Using tapestry needle thread yarn tail though remaining 6 stitches and cinch together.
Knot yarn to Preemie Hat Crown and weave  thread tail on the  inside of Preemie Hat.

Options:  Add stripes after 1 inch from beginning.

Variegated yarn creates natural "stripes".

For the 30 Day Art Challenge Day 7: Create something reflecting on "Beauty for Ashes"
I worked more on this orange flower collage on blue batik.
This flower shape I designed has a long story behind it and the first 3 times I created with it the Lord was speaking that He would bring beauty out of that painful time - ashes.
I even titled one of the pieces, "a crown of beauty instead."
This time, the Lord actually redeemed the flower shape into beauty
not representing ashes. Redemption - how sweet.
