"No Hiding" Oak Leaf

 With 3 leaves finished,
I'm continuing my "No Hiding"
and plan to create more solid on solid
hand appliqued leaves.
Yes, this is a challenge for one who
really enjoys using batik fabric.

" No Where To Hide"

At our recent Asheville Modern Quilt Guild meeting,
Elizabeth Garlington stated that she felt when using solid fabrics
that there was "no where to hide".
I've pondered that quite a bit since I mainly use batik fabrics.
Now as I quilt this Wall Art piece that is primarily gray fabric,
I am understanding her thoughts better.

Green Leaves Hand Applique

Since I've had an idea to create another  improvisational  leaf
art piece, similar but not the same as the one I created in February,
AND
Since my dear friend Eydie gifted me
a generous bag of various solid colored green remnants,
AND
Since I am really wanting to start another
hand project,
I've begun hand appliqueing free hand cut
3 leaves and hand appliqueing them to a
contrasting fabric. 32 inches X 5 inches.

Modern Free Style Quilting

Quilting Section 1 of 4 of the Modern Quilt using my
Lots of solid fabric is new for me....so is straight line quilting.
After 7 rows I've chosen to mix it up a bit with a sophisticated
geometric deign.

Modern Quilt Direction

I've chosen to go with a Modern Quilt design using
some dark grey fabric.  Squaring off 4 of  my Scrap Vortex QALBlocks
using  my 12 1/2 inch square ruler made them easier to use.
I'm thinking this may be a series as I'm already planning other projects with
the many other Scrap Vortex blocks I've created.

Trimming Scrap Vortex Pairs

OK - I've emptied one bin of batik remnants
creating pairs that are similar in size.
Time to "square" them to create more blocks.
Still not sure what to do with all the blocks
although I've purchased a dark grey fabric
to use for 4 of them .

Quilted Art Lapel Pin - Eileen Williams

A thoughtful friend brought back this
batik landscape Quilted Art Lapel Pin
for me from her trip to the beach recently.
It's beautifully created by Eileen Williams
who creates larger amazing pieces as well.

Batik Strings Into Fabric Locker Hook Rug

As I'm creating blocks
for the Scrap Vortex QAL from the batik remnant bin,
I'm adding the too thin to piece strips to a bucket where
the strips are creating this Locker Hook Rug.
I first learned of Locker Hook Rug making
when I worked at a local quilt shop.
It's so easy, we gave on the spot demonstrations with
the rung in process by the check out register.
Of course I created one of my own that has stood the
test of time at my front door.
It uses up thin fabric strips, easy take along project and
washes wonderfully. What's not to love?
This new rug is totally random and I like the idea of using up even the skinniest strips.

Auditioning Background For Scrap Vortex QAL Blocks

I began the Scrap Vortex QAL
in June along with Crazy Mom Quilts
creating various sized batik blocks and rectangles.
and even creating some  non batik blocks
that were completed with the help of my grandsons
I have about 8 sections finished currently with more batik remnants
to go.  I've considering this placement for a large Wall Art Hanging
with 4 of them on a black fabric.
